SailorPath Asian and Oceania Optimist Index

An independent analytical index of verified Optimist results for sailors representing Asian and Oceanian national authorities. Standings are calculated under the V1 (Beta) rolling 12-month methodology for the 175 Asian and Oceanian competitors from verified international championships (World Championship, Asian & Oceanian Championship, European Championship) and designated regional regattas.

2025 official results

V1 (Beta) methodology is live. Standings are calculated using the V1 (Beta) points formula (E × (N − P + 1) ÷ N) with event-grade and host-country caps across eligible Asian and Oceanian regattas. This is an independent analytical index published by SailorPath, not an official IODA or national federation ranking.

The Index in one page

The SailorPath Asian and Oceania Optimist Index is an independent analytical index of verified Optimist results. It is not an official IODA or national federation ranking and must not be used as a team-selection tool. Updated 18 October 2026.

Who is ranked
Sailors verified as representing an eligible Asian or Oceanian MNA, through 31 December of the year they turn 15, with at least one scoring result in the rolling window.
What counts
A sailor's best five eligible results in a rolling 12 months, within the event-grade and country limits below. Results expire on their first anniversary.
Result points
E × (N − P + 1) ÷ N, where E is the event grade, N the valid starters and P the final place. The winner earns E; last place earns E ÷ N.

Event grades

Event grades, host rules and gates
GradeEventsHostGates once racing is finished
150 · ChampionshipIODA World Championship and official IODA continental fleet-racing championshipsAnywhereOfficial final individual classification; at least 5 completed races
75 · Major international openDesignated major international Optimist opens that meet the published criteriaAsia & Oceania by default; a few designated non-regional exceptionsAt least 40 valid starters from at least 4 MNAs; at least 4 completed races
40 · National championshipDesignated national championships recognised by the national class association or sailing authorityAsia & Oceania, and the host MNA's own championshipAt least 30 valid starters; at least 4 completed races

Other results, including club events, clinics, team racing, development divisions and events that miss their gates, stay on sailor histories as Grade 0 and score nothing.

Six limits on the best five

  1. At most five results overall.
  2. At most two Grade 150 results.
  3. At most one World Championship result.
  4. At most four Grade 150 and Grade 75 results combined.
  5. At most one Grade 75 result per host MNA jurisdiction.
  6. At most one Grade 40 result per host MNA jurisdiction per calendar year.

SailorPath picks the highest-scoring combination that satisfies all six, so a lower-grade result can replace a weaker higher-grade one. A missing Worlds result is never a penalty.

How a Grade 75 open is designated

Before racing, a candidate must show at least 50 registered sailors from at least 4 verified MNAs in its primary competition. After racing, it must confirm at least 40 valid starters from 4 MNAs and 4 completed races. Grades are fixed in advance and never assigned after seeing who won.

Proposed 2026–27 event register

Every event below is a proposal. Nothing is designated until SailorPath publishes the designation record with its timestamp. Starter and MNA counts come from final result sheets imported into SailorPath and measure starters, not registrations, so they are a proxy for the registration criterion.

Grade 75 · major international opens

Nominate or confirm an event

National class associations, federations, host clubs, coaches and parents are invited to nominate Grade 75 opens and each country's single premier Grade 40 national championship for 2026–27. Nominations must arrive before racing, because we never assign a grade after seeing the result.

  • Event name and edition, organiser or host club, dates and host country.
  • Proposed grade (75 or 40) and the Notice of Race.
  • Fleet format: one combined overall classification, or separate Gold and Silver entry divisions.
  • Entry list or registration statistics, with the number of sailors and MNAs.
  • After racing: the official final results and the final race date.

The nomination and correction submission channel opens with the launch announcement.

How this provisional score works

Who is ranked: verified Asian and Oceanian Optimist sailors representing eligible MNAs with at least one verified scoring result in the 12-month window. The cohort includes competitors from the 2025 Asian & Oceanian Championship, 2026 World Championship, and 2026 European Championship.

Points formula: each eligible result earns points based on event grade (E), valid starters (N), and finishing position (P): Points = E × (N − P + 1) ÷ N. First place earns E, and last place earns E ÷ N.

Event tiers: Grade 150 for IODA Worlds and continental fleet-racing championships; Grade 75 for designated international opens meeting the 50-starter / 4-MNA gates; Grade 40 for recognized national championships.

Selection limits: each sailor’s Index is the sum of their best combination of results subject to six selection limits: at most 5 results overall; at most 2 Grade 150 results; at most 1 World Championship; at most 4 upper-grade results (Grade 150 + 75); at most 1 Grade 75 result per host MNA; and at most 1 Grade 40 result per host MNA per calendar year.

Profile links: sailor names link to their verified SailorPath profile. Results expire on their 12-month anniversary.
